Mindstream Series of Drawings

I began this series of drawings after reading about the concept of mindstream in Buddhist philosophy, which is literally described as “the stream of mind,” it’s the moment-to-moment flow of sense impressions and mental phenomena.

As we have moved indoors and now endure increased isolation, I am struck by an ever-present need to balance inner peace and creatively connecting with others via artwork (in spite of social distancing).  As with all my work, drawing is an introspective process – I find myself reflecting on the inner journey, about letting go of old forms and opening to new ones, of balancing the path inwards with the pathway outwards. The choreography of shapes and colors creates a motion across the paper, a fluid yet gently turbulent “stream of mind” that arises and passes away in each moment.

The Mindstream series are all done in prismacolor pencils on Stonehenge paper.

I never felt like I chose ART – I felt like ART chose me, and so it’s like a moth being attracted to a flame (inspiration), ART was calling me, always has, still does.  I was born to be an artist.  My mother told me that when I was 7 years old I announced I was going to France and be an artist.  I’ve been an artist my whole life.  It’s all I’ve ever wanted to be/do.  That said, I’ve also been blessed to have several incredible teachers who guided me along the way.

I am most proud that I have maintained a full-time studio practice since 1991 – exhibiting and selling my work.  The art business is tough, and at times my motto was “survival = success”. It’s very gratifying to me, knowing that my work is “out there in the world,” being seen in galleries, museums, and in corporate and private settings, giving people an opportunity to pause for a moment and reflect.

My work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States, including the Museum of Fine Arts, FSU, Tallahassee, Florida; University of Hawaii, Hilo, Hawaii; Monmouth Museum, Monmouth, New Jersey; Anthony Kelley Gallery, New Orleans, Louisina; Oxford Gallery and Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, New York, and ArtPrize, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  In addition, my work is in numerous collections, including Maxtor Corp.,Denver, Colorado; Hale and Dorr, Boston, Massachusetts; Simon School of Business, Rochester, NY; Medimmune, Inc. Gaithersburg, Maryland; and Information Technology Assoc. of America, Arlington, Virginia.

I am the recipient of the Artist LifeTime Achievement Award (2016), from Art Design Consultants, Cincinatti, Ohio and the Distinguished Alumni Award (2004), Finger Lakes Community College, Canandaigua, NY.
