Lahja Kumpula is a 45-year-old and a self-taught artist from Finland. She paints mainly abstract works. Her inspiration comes from nature, spaces and diffrent atmospheres. She said: “I used to describe nature by taking photos and by words. The movement of light has always fascinated me. In art, a certain physical balance is important to me. I like soft graphics, layering, warm colors and surprising my viewers.” She often works alongside her own children and they also originally gave her inspiration to start painting. She said: “My work is characterized by physicality and intuition. Movement, spaces and different cycles, as well as spontaneous variation of techniques. I also use materials from nature. I throw myself into the power of intuition and let it take me. I look at the work from further afield and from different perspectives, and during the process I look past the board. The imprint arises from my physical feeling. In the finishing phase of the work, I often refine the details. I like that the different stages of my work get to be seen. Incompleteness speaks to me.” Her motto is: "Believe and trust in your intuition, it holds your whole life lived."
