Rogério Mariano was born in 1954 in the city of Juiz de Fora - MG, about 250 Km from Belo Horizonte. Since he was a child, the artist was always paying attention to the images that, unawarely, would be the cement that would build up his career as an artist.
An example of this is his childhood memory of every coming of winter, in his hometown, his mother would wash all the comforters and quilts and they were all really colorful.Then she would hang them in the backyard in the middle of the fruit and vegetable garden.
The color contrast has always caught his attention and would probably have been the initiation of his fondness for colors.
Another fragment of his memory as teenager, that has definitely contributed to the beggining of the construction of his artistic object, was the use of a precarious photo camera with which he used to take detailed black and white pictures of tree branches, decomposed wood, dry leaves on the ground, and walls that were worn down over time.
As we can see, the images that refer to art have always been present in his life.
Another important collaboration to his initiation in arts, was his grandfather's hobby of copying images from newspapers and magazines in silk paper from his drawing books and creating political cartoons from those images. Trying to imitate his grandfather, he has started drawing.
Since his teenage years he has tried to translate his observations of the daily life into drawings, paintings and collages , in that time, figurative , surrealistic and psychedelic , also inspired in collected images from Salvador Dali and René Magritte.
When he was still a teenager, he did his first professional art work, in his homeland, painting a landscape of sea and mountains, using oil paint, in a panel located in a restaurant lobby, called Viseu, his father’s property.
In 1991, he had his first contact with an art school in Vitória-ES, were he lived back then, the "Núcleo de Artes Visuais de Vitória" (Center of Visual Arts of Vitória). Then in 1992, also in Vitória, he attended "Oficina Livre de Pintura" (Free Painting Workshop) from the artist Ivanilde Brunow, at "Escola de Arte FAFI" (FAFI Art School). While there, he had the opportunity to work with the deconstruction of the images in his works and was formally introduced to abstraction . Since then, the act of moving away from figurative art or the object, has became a process.
This process of deconstruction of the images made him improve observation of abstract art and exercise the composition of a kind of art derived from imagination, inspired by instinct.
At this moment he was sure that abstraction would be the best way of draining his art verve, by the disengagement of expressing an apparent or concrete reality.
Between the years of 1994 and 1996, he studied art at "Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Laje - EAV" (Visual Art School of Parque Laje - EAV), in Rio de Janeiro, where he had the opportunity to deepen his studies of contemporary abstract art, having as masters the artists João Magalhães and Beatriz Milhazes. This encounter with informal abstraction allowed him to give emphasis to subjectivity and construction of the artworks in a gestural, free way, and without previous project exploring the sensitive effects of colors.
The time he spent at the "Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Laje" (Visual Art School of Parque Laje), would be a watershed in his career, once art has really become protagonist in his life.
He has participated in individual and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers in Brazil, in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília and abroad, in Helsinki - Finland, Paris, New York, Miami and Japan.
